5 Spring Activities for Seniors
March comes in like a lion and goes out like a lamb. Now that the weather is getting warmer there are many outdoor activities available for seniors and their loved ones to enjoy together. Go outside and enjoy the sunshine with these five spring activities for seniors.
1. Take a Walk
Walking is a great way to enjoy the spring weather and get some exercise. Take a relaxing walk alone or make it a social activity by joining a walking group. If you want to take it easy just stroll around a nearby park and take a break to play chess or watch the local wildlife. For something more difficult, try a hiking trail or a guided nature walk. If the daytime heat is an issue, try walking at dusk when you can listen to the cicadas and watch the fireflies.
2. Garden
Gardening is a wonderful outdoor activity. Plant some spring bulbs in your back or front yard. If you want to grow some vegetables try starting out with something easy to take care of like a tomato plant. If you live in an apartment or have trouble bending over to tend to a garden, you can grow herbs in a windowsill planter. Try basil, dill, thyme, or parsley to start.
3. Find Local Activities
Many communities offer free concerts or movie screenings. Call ahead and find out if seating is provided or if you need to bring your own. Bring along some snacks and some friends and have a great night out on the town. Local activities are a great way to get involved with the community and meet some wonderful new friends. If you prefer sporting events, go to a local high school or college game.
4. Volunteer
There are a lot of springtime volunteer opportunities available for seniors. If you are an animal lover, find a local shelter and see if they need volunteers to play with the cats or walk the dogs. Art aficionados can volunteer at a nearby museum and give the visitors tours or information about the artwork. If you are looking for a relaxing activity, join a knitting group and make blankets and slippers that can be donated to a local organization.
5. Berry Picking
Strawberry picking at a local farm is a lovely way to spend an afternoon. Bring the whole family and spend some quality time together while encouraging healthy eating habits. Most farms also offer hayrides, pony rides, and petting zoos where you can take some great pictures of the grandchildren to remember the outing. There are no wrong ways to use fresh strawberries. Eat the fruit plain or use them for delicious deserts.
